description
This indicator provides daily data on the amount of water falling to the Earth's surface as rain, snow, or other forms of precipitation. This data is crucial for water resource management, agricultural planning, and flood and drought risk assessment. It is a fundamental variable for understanding weather and climate and their impacts on both human systems and natural ecosystems.
methodology
Data is extracted from the ERA5-land weather re-analysis data made available through the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The data is analysed further for historical trends over the past 5 years using time-series analysis (seasonal decomposition).
validation
Weather reanalysis data is being calibrated and validated against ground stations and satellite based measurements. Specifically for precipitation ground data is used to constrain the hindcasting model and maximise the representation of true ground data. This is done by the ECMWF directly.
