description
This indicator provides a measure of vegetation health by comparing current satellite-observed greenness to the historical range of values for the same period. It is a powerful tool for monitoring the health and productivity of ecosystems and agricultural lands. It is particularly effective at detecting and monitoring drought conditions, providing an early warning of potential impacts on crop yields and food security.
methodology
Calculates NDVI using Sentinel-2 data with cloud masking. Values are linearly interpolated to daily time-series, aggregated by median, and smoothed using a Savitzky-Golay filter. Standard deviation is calculated to characterize distribution. A negative 10m buffer is applied to large polygons to reduce adjacency effects.
validation
The reliability of this analysis is rooted in the quality of the source data. We use Copernicus Sentinel-2 Level-2A products provided by the European Space Agency (ESA). This data has undergone rigorous geometric and radiometric calibration and atmospheric correction. This official processing removes distortions caused by atmospheric effects, ensuring the surface reflectance values are highly accurate and comparable over time.
