description
Identifies the location and proximity of officially recognized protected areas, such as national parks and nature reserves, as defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This information is crucial for understanding the location sensitivity of a landscape and for managing risks associated with operating near ecologically sensitive areas. It is an essential component of environmental due diligence and for developing impact and mitigation strategies, e.g. TNFD, that contribute to regional conservation goals and corporate biodiversity footprint reduction.
methodology
We use a global dataset of protected areas extracted from the World Database of Protected Areas (WDPA), if an IBAT licence can be provided by the customer, and calculate the proximity of each site to the nearest protected area within landscape radii of 5-30 km.
validation
The spatial database of protected areas (WDPA) is the authoritative datasource for protected area extents. Validation and quality control in our processing module filters any remaining incosistencies, such as overlapping areas or duplicate entries.
