description
Identifies the location and proximity of officially recognized protected areas, such as national parks and nature reserves. The underlying database has been curated from publicly available data on protected areas. This information is crucial for understanding the location sensitivity of a landscape and for managing risks associated with operating near ecologically sensitive areas. It is an essential component of environmental due diligence and for developing impact and mitigation strategies, e.g. TNFD, that contribute to regional conservation goals and corporate biodiversity footprint reduction.
methodology
We use a global dataset of protected areas extracted from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and other authoritative data sources, such as the European Union, to calculate the proximity of each site to the nearest protected area within landscape radii of 5 to 30 km.
validation
Validation of this indicator involves cross-referencing OSM protected area data with official protected area databases and government-maintained conservation area inventories. As with any crowd sourced dataset, inconsistencies and incompleteness cannot be ruled out completely, however, where detectable our automated filters remove these.
