description
This indicator extracts the confirmed presence of threatened species as classified by the IUCN Red List from public biodiversity databases. It serves as a critical measure identifying landscapes of high conservation importance. Monitoring rare and threatened species is essential for environmental impact assessments, guiding conservation efforts, and ensuring compliance with biodiversity regulations.
methodology
We extract, filter and aggregate all confirmed species observations of threatened species that have been registered in the World’s largest biodiversity observation database of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Note that data availability varies depending on location, but is increasing daily. We provide aggregated species counts and species lists for landscape radii of 5 to 30km.
validation
Validation of this indicator involves cross-referencing species occurrence data with authoritative species range maps and regional checklists, automated flagging of implausible and non-native species observations as well as coordinate accuracy filtering.
