description
This indicator identifies lands and territories that are legally registered to, managed, or inhabited by Indigenous Peoples. Recognizing these areas is fundamental for upholding their rights and for ensuring socially responsible and equitable land use. Given that Indigenous lands often harbor high levels of biodiversity, this information is also critical for conservation planning and for businesses to manage social and operational risks in their supply chains.
methodology
Data is sourced through a bottom-up methodology that aggregates georeferenced boundaries and points from a global network of authoritative sources, including local and international NGOs, Indigenous coalitions, and land rights organizations.
validation
This data is strictly digital and sourced from contributors such as the World Resources Institute (WRI), the Indigenous Peoples' Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN), and the International Land Coalition (ILC) who have obtained the explicit consent of the concerned Indigenous Peoples or local communities. Each dataset is processed into a standardized typology that categorizes land based on identity, legal recognition, and documentation status, ensuring that diverse customary and formal tenures are comparable on a global scale. By requiring all submissions to be provided in georeferenced formats like shapefiles or geodatabases, LandMark maintains high technical accuracy while preserving data sovereignty for the original providers.
