ASTER

Provides high-resolution (15m–90m) thermal and hyperspectral imagery for geological mapping, land use, and land surface temperature analysis.

Above-ground Carbon (AGC)

The carbon stored in vegetation above the surface, including trees and shrubs. Estimated using LiDAR, optical, and radar remote sensing for forest conservation and carbon accounting.

Additionality

Additionality ensures that environmental benefits from a project are genuinely new and would not have occurred under normal circumstances, preventing "false" environmental claims.

Assessment Method

The technique used to produce a Measurement for an Indicator. Examples: Remote sensing, Soil sampling, Modelling, Database Query etc.

Asset

A Plot, Plot Group or Site which is of commercial importance to the user. Users are free to define Assets as they see fit.

Asset Type

A predefined category for an Asset that describes its primary function. Examples: Farm, Forest, Production Plant, Real Estate. Link to list of asset types

Assetization

Assetization involves converting non-traditional assets like natural capital or data into forms that can be financially leveraged, enabling new markets or investment opportunities.

BISI

BISI is used to measure and assess biodiversity impacts at specific sites, providing indicators for companies and organizations to improve environmental stewardship.

Basket

A collection or aggregation of multiple Natural Capital Units. A Basket may comprise various types of units (such as Stock Units and/or Uplift Units), quantities, and origins, bundled together for specific valuation, investment or trading purposes.

Below-ground Carbon (BGC)

The amount of carbon stored in soil and roots, crucial for understanding soil health and climate change mitigation. Monitored using remote sensing, process modeling, and soil sampling techniques.

CHA

CHA holds environmental claims, ensuring proper tracking and management of natural capital investments and emissions reductions.

CPIC

CPIC is a global network of private investors dedicated to advancing conservation efforts through financial resources, ensuring sustainable land use and biodiversity.

CSDDD

CSDDD mandates companies to assess and address sustainability risks within their supply chains, including human rights, environmental issues, and governance.

CSRD

CSRD requires companies in the EU to report on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, promoting transparency and accountability.

Carbon Sequestration

The process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon in forests, soil, and oceans. Remote sensing helps monitor carbon fluxes and storage trends.

Certification

Certification involves an external, authorized party certifying that a company, product, or process meets specific standards, such as environmental sustainability criteria.

Co-Pilot

The platform's intelligence engine that provides users with contextual information to support decision-making. It is the container for all Insights.

Commodity

A raw material which can be traded on the global market. E.g. gold, wheat, oil, butter, milk.. etc. We need to discuss how we represent commodities on the platform

Contract

The legal document that formalizes the terms of an Investment, specifying the obligations of the parties involved.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)

A deep learning architecture specifically designed for image recognition and processing, widely used in remote sensing for land classification and pattern detection.

Crop

A cultivated plant species or variety grown on a Plot for agricultural or commercial purposes. A Crop is a Commodity

CryoSat-2

Monitors polar ice thickness and sea ice changes at ~300m resolution, with a 30-day repeat cycle for climate research.

DFP

DFP allows claims to be transferred without immediate financial exchange, enabling smoother transactions in natural capital markets.

Data Source

The origin of the variables required to measure an Indicator. E.g. a Geomodel, a publicly available database (e.g. climate data), an internal database (e.g. data measured by TLG from camera traps).

Deep Learning (DL) in Remote Sensing

Advanced neural networks used for automatic feature detection, object classification, and segmentation of satellite images.
